7 Truths About Writers →
3. We are scared and doubt ourselves We want people to read our words but at the same time, we fear criticism and negative reaction. We compare ourselves to others and we often come up short. We doubt that we are original or that people will even want to read our words. We worry that we have opened ourselves up too much to the world, and then we fret because we haven’t been...

Bored People Quit →
Much has been written about employee motivation and retention. It’s written by folks who actively use words like motivation and retention and generally don’t have a clue about the daily necessity of keeping your team professionally content because they’ve either never done the work or have forgotten how it’s done. These are the people who show up when your...

Word of the day: demonym
A demonym, also referred to as a gentilic, is a name for a resident of a locality. A demonym is usually — though not always — derived from the name of the locality; thus, in English, the demonym for the people of Italy is Italian, though the one used for the people of the Netherlands is Dutch. More to read (and plenty of examples) over at the Wikipedia entry.

It’s about time that everyone learned their damn homophones. If you slept your way through the fourth grade or just skipped all of the grammar lectures because you were too busy sucking off that...

Do I Have a Moment for the Environment? No. →
EDW Lynch: I live in a walkable San Francisco shopping district that has the extraordinary misfortune of being the prime hunting grounds of the face-to-face street fundraiser. I prefer the British slang, however: charity mugger or “chugger.” A chugger is a fresh-faced 20something who waves and shouts at you like a long lost friend, and then demands you give money to...
